Have you heard about Little Britain in Canada? Did you know that there is a community named such in Canada? It is a community situated in the city of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada. The location of this community is 15 kilometers southwest of Lindsay, another community located on the Scugog River in Ontario, Canada. Formerly, Little Britain is a part of Mariposa Township and Victoria County (a unitary municipality located in Central Ontario, Canada) and now it is part of Ward 8, Kawartha Lakes City. The total population of this community today is approximately 1,100 and its motto is “Sports Capital of Kawarthas”.
The history of this community can never be complete without Harrison Haight, a man who established Little Britain in the year 1834. He was the first one to build a mill in the community in 1837. The said mill lasted till 1910. During this time, no road can be used to transit from this community to Oakwood, situated 5 kilometers to the north. It was in the year 1850 when the first church was built by Christians. Subsequently, the Bible Church was built in 1852 and Post Office in 1853. The community’s economic production was advanced through the railway brought into Lindsay.
Nowadays, Little Britain is still primarily considered as an agricultural town. The mass arrival of cottagers on nearby Lake Scugog has paved the way for a significant presence of tourists. There are some people who use the Little Britain Road instead of the Highway 4 to avoid traffic on the latter. Like typical cities, there are some local amenities found in this community including park, hair salon, grocery store, restaurant, bank, bakeshop, post office, community library, arena and others. All of these facilities and services simply show that this small town has eventually progressed over years.
